Our team at NOVA Ponds uses a variety of treatments to ensure your water quality is top-notch. Here are a few of the treatments we may employ.
Beneficial Bacteria
Beneficial bacteria may be introduced to your pond to keep your fish healthy and your water clean. Beneficial bacteria work by consuming excess nutrients in your pond’s ecosystem. These nutrients are common and come from several sources, such as fish waste, leftover food, and leaf litter. Beneficial bacteria also assist fish in exchanging toxins in their blood through their gills, keeping them happy and healthy! Overall, beneficial bacteria treatment is very effective at keeping your pond free of algae and harmful nitrogenous waste. For maximum effectiveness, from spring through fall, you may add the proper dose of beneficial bacteria to your pond.
Rock Scrubber
If you have stubborn algae or stains on your rocks, Rock Scrubber may be applied. The active ingredient in Rock Scrubber is Sodium Perchlorate, which acts similarly to hydrogen peroxide. It functions by oxidizing the surface it is applied to, dissolving any difficult-to-remove algae or other organic material while remaining completely safe to use in a pond stocked with fish. The dissolved material is easily removed from skimmer baskets once treatment is complete.
Dechlorinator
Your system may be dosed with a dechlorinator if you intend on stocking fish. Chlorine is a harmful chemical added to city water to sterilize it for drinking. Fish are not particularly fond of chlorine, and therefore, if you are on city water, it should be treated with a dechlorinator that instantly removes any chlorine present, allowing fish to live a happy and healthy life in your pond. This treatment may not be necessary if you are on well water. For maximum effectiveness, add dechlorinator every time you add tap water to your pond, ideally added to the water before it is introduced to the pond.
Algaecide & Barley Straw
Your pond may be dosed with an algaecide or barley straw extract if your pond has an overabundance of algae. Algaecides work by removing any existing algae. We do not recommend treating your pond with algaecides during the wintertime if you have fish, as they are sensitive during this time. We may add barley straw extract as an algae preventative if your pond receives lots of sun. These treatments apply to any kind of algae, including green water. For maximum effectiveness, algaecide may be added every two weeks as needed. Be mindful to correctly dose algaecide.
